Frequently asked questions

+Do I need an account to use ClearDive?

No. You can browse water quality data as a guest. You only need an account to submit your own samples, save searches, and manage your submissions.

+How do I submit a water test result?

Tap Submit and follow the steps: choose how you tested (manual entry, digital meter, printed report, or color test strip), enter the sample location and date, then confirm the readings. You always review and confirm values before anything is saved.

+How does scanning a test strip, meter, or report work?

ClearDive reads the numbers on a digital meter, the values on a printed report, or the pad colors on a test strip, and suggests measurements for you to confirm. It cannot detect contaminants from an ordinary photo of water — invisible contaminants like lead, PFAS, or bacteria require an actual test strip, meter, or lab report.

+Why does the app ask for camera or location access?

Camera is used only to scan a test strip, meter, or report. Location is used only when you tap 'Use my location' to tag a sample or center the map — you can also just type a ZIP code. Both are optional and are never used in the background. You can change these anytime in iOS Settings › Privacy & Security.

+What do the safety labels mean?

Each reading is compared against configurable health and regulatory thresholds and labeled Clean, Low concern, Moderate concern, Severe concern, or Insufficient data. Labels always appear as text alongside color. For a severe reading we recommend certified laboratory testing — community and scanned readings are screening tools, not a lab result or medical diagnosis.

+How do I edit or delete a sample I submitted?

Open your Dashboard to see your submissions. You can edit drafts or unverified samples and delete any sample you submitted.

+How do I delete my account?

In the app, go to Account › Delete account, or email us at the address below and we'll remove your account and personal data. See the Privacy Policy for exactly what is removed and retained.

+Where does the government data come from?

Reference readings are pulled from public monitoring datasets such as the EPA Water Quality Portal, USGS National Water Information System, and state agencies like NJDEP, shown alongside community data with clear source labeling.

+I found a bug or have a feature request.

Email us with as much detail as you can — what you were doing, what you expected, your device and iOS version, and screenshots if possible.
